For odd-shaped areas, break the space into simple shapes (rectangles, triangles, circles), calculate each one, and add them together. Measure to the nearest inch for the most accurate results.

How to measure square footage

For a simple rectangle, multiply length times width. A room that is 12 feet by 15 feet is 180 square feet. For L shaped rooms or odd shapes, break the space into rectangles, measure each one separately, and add them together. For triangles, multiply the base times the height and divide by 2. This calculator handles rectangles, triangles, and circles.

Why accurate square footage matters

Every material estimate starts with square footage. Flooring, paint, roofing, siding, drywall, insulation, it all gets ordered based on the area you are covering. If your square footage is off, your material order is off. Measure twice, enter once. Being 10 percent off on a 2,000 square foot roof means 200 square feet of materials you are either short or overpaying for.

Square feet vs square yards vs acres

There are 9 square feet in a square yard. That conversion matters for carpet, which is sold by the square yard. There are 43,560 square feet in an acre. For large landscaping or excavation jobs, working in acres or fractions of an acre is easier than giant square foot numbers. This calculator helps you convert between all of them.

Common Questions

Does a garage count in square footage?

No. Garages are not included in the livable square footage of a home. Neither are unfinished basements or attics. Only heated and finished living space counts.

Do closets count in square footage?

Yes. Walk-in closets, reach-in closets, and pantries all count toward the total square footage as long as they are finished and part of the living space.

How is square footage measured for a house?

Measure the exterior walls of each floor and multiply length times width. Subtract the garage, unfinished areas, and any spaces with ceilings under 5 feet. Only finished, heated space counts.

What is the average square footage of a home in the US?

The average American home is about 2,200 square feet. New construction averages closer to 2,400 square feet. That number has been going up steadily for decades.
