Flooring Calculator
Calculate square footage and boxes of flooring needed with waste factor included.
1 room totaling 180 sq ft. With 10% waste: 198 sq ft ÷ 20 sq ft/box = 10 boxes. Always buy from the same dye lot - keep any extra boxes for future repairs.
How to calculate flooring materials
Measure the length and width of the room in feet and multiply them together to get the square footage. For rooms that are not perfect rectangles, break them into smaller sections, calculate each one, and add them together. Then add your waste factor. This calculator handles the math and factors in waste for whatever flooring type you are installing.
How much extra flooring to buy
For a standard rectangular room with a straight lay pattern, 10 percent waste is the minimum. Diagonal patterns bump that to 15 percent. Herringbone or complex patterns can hit 20 percent. Tile has a higher waste factor than hardwood or LVP because cuts at the walls and around obstacles create more unusable pieces. Always order from the same lot to avoid color variation between boxes.
Flooring types and what to expect
Hardwood comes in boxes measured by square feet. LVP and laminate are the same. Tile is sold by the square foot or by the piece. Carpet is sold by the square yard, so divide your square footage by 9 to convert. Each material has different installation requirements. Tile needs thinset and grout on top of the tile itself. Hardwood might need underlayment. Factor in those extras when ordering.
