Mulch Calculator
Calculate cubic yards and bags of mulch needed for any landscaping bed or area.
20 x 10 ft at 3" deep = 1.85 cubic yards. Order mulch by the cubic yard from a landscape supplier for the best price on larger jobs. One cubic yard covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep.
How much mulch do I need?
Mulch is sold by the cubic yard. One cubic yard covers about 162 square feet at 2 inches deep, 108 square feet at 3 inches deep, or 81 square feet at 4 inches deep. Measure your bed area in square feet, pick your depth, and this calculator tells you how many yards to order. Most landscape supply places deliver by the yard and have minimums, so knowing your number before you call saves time.
How deep should mulch be?
For most flower beds and tree rings, 2 to 3 inches is ideal. Anything less and weeds push through too easily. Anything more and you can suffocate plant roots and trap too much moisture. For pathways, 3 to 4 inches gives you a nice firm surface. If you are refreshing existing mulch that has decomposed, just top it off to get back to 2 to 3 inches total depth.
Bags vs bulk mulch
A standard 2 cubic foot bag of mulch covers about 8 square feet at 3 inches deep. You would need about 13.5 bags to equal one cubic yard. For anything more than a small garden bed, buying in bulk by the yard is way cheaper. A yard of mulch delivered usually costs $30 to $60 depending on the type. Buying that same amount in bags would run $50 to $100.
Common Questions
What is the best type of mulch?
Hardwood mulch is the best all around pick. It breaks down slow, stays in place, and feeds the soil. Pine bark works great for acid loving plants. Rubber mulch lasts forever but does not improve the soil.
Does mulch attract termites?
Mulch does not attract termites directly, but it holds moisture that termites like. Keep mulch 6 inches away from your foundation and you will be fine. Cedar mulch is the most termite resistant.
Should you remove old mulch before adding new?
No, just add new mulch on top as long as the total depth stays under 4 inches. If the old mulch is matted down or moldy, rake it up to break it loose before adding the new layer.
When is the best time to mulch?
Mid to late spring after the soil warms up is ideal. Mulching too early keeps the ground cold and slows plant growth. Fall mulching is good too for winter protection.
