20 x 10 ft at 4" deep = 2.47 cubic yards (3.8 tons of gravel (crushed)). Most suppliers sell by the ton for bulk delivery. Always confirm the weight per yard with your supplier since it varies by moisture and stone type.

How to calculate gravel for a project

Like mulch, gravel is sold by the cubic yard or by the ton. Measure your area in square feet, decide on the depth, and convert to cubic yards. Gravel is heavier than mulch, so weight matters for delivery. One cubic yard of gravel weighs roughly 1.5 tons depending on the type. This calculator gives you both cubic yards and tonnage so you can order however your supplier sells it.

How deep should a gravel driveway be?

A gravel driveway needs a base layer of 4 to 6 inches of larger crushed stone, then a top layer of 2 to 3 inches of smaller stone or gravel. Total depth is usually 6 to 8 inches. For a parking pad or light traffic area, 4 inches total might be enough. For areas with heavy trucks, go deeper. Compacting each layer is critical. Loose gravel shifts around and creates ruts.

Types of gravel and what to use where

Crushed stone (3/4 inch) is the standard for driveways and base material. Pea gravel is small and rounded, good for pathways and drainage but terrible for driveways because it shifts under tires. River rock is decorative and good for landscaping beds. Item 4 or crusher run compacts well and is great for base layers. Pick the right type for the job or you will be redoing it sooner than you want.

Common Questions

Does a gravel driveway need a weed barrier?

Yes. Lay landscape fabric under the gravel or weeds will push right through within a year. Use commercial grade fabric, not the cheap stuff from the big box store.

How long does a gravel driveway last?

A well built gravel driveway lasts 10 to 15 years before it needs a fresh top layer. You will need to rake and fill low spots every year or two to keep it looking right.

Can you put gravel directly over grass?

You can but it is a bad idea. The grass dies and rots underneath, creating soft spots. Strip the sod first, compact the soil, lay fabric, then spread gravel for a solid base.

Does gravel wash away in the rain?

Pea gravel and round stone wash away the worst. Angular crushed stone locks together and stays put much better. Proper grading and a border or edging along the sides helps too.
