Wallpaper Calculator

Calculate how many rolls of wallpaper you need including pattern repeat allowance.

Add all wall lengths (e.g. 15+12+15+12 = 54)

398 sq ft of wall ÷ 61 usable sq ft per roll × 1.10 waste factor = 8 rolls. Always buy one extra roll in case of damage or future repairs - dye lots change between production runs.

How to calculate wallpaper for a room

Measure the total wall area by adding up the length of all walls and multiplying by the ceiling height. Subtract windows and doors. Then divide by the usable coverage per roll, which varies by the wallpaper but is usually around 25 to 28 square feet for a standard American single roll. Pattern repeats reduce the usable area per roll because you waste material matching the pattern.

What is pattern repeat and why it matters

Pattern repeat is the distance before the design starts over. A wallpaper with a 12 inch repeat means you lose up to 12 inches on every strip just matching the pattern. Larger repeats mean more waste. A random match or solid wallpaper has no waste from pattern matching. Always check the repeat before ordering. It can add 15 to 20 percent to your material needs.

How many rolls to order

Always round up and buy an extra roll or two. Wallpaper is printed in dye lots and if you run short, the next batch might not match exactly. Unopened rolls can usually be returned. Running out mid job and finding out the pattern is discontinued is a problem nobody wants to deal with.

Common Questions

Is wallpaper making a comeback?

Yes. Wallpaper is more popular now than it has been in 20 years, especially accent walls and bold patterns. Peel and stick options have made it easier for renters and DIYers too.

How long does wallpaper last?

Good quality wallpaper lasts 15 to 20 years in a normal room. Bathrooms and kitchens with moisture see more peeling. Vinyl wallpaper holds up the longest in humid areas.

Can you wallpaper over textured walls?

Not without prep work. You need to skim coat the wall smooth first or the texture will show through. Peel and stick wallpaper looks especially bad on textured walls.

Is wallpaper easier than painting?

Hanging wallpaper takes more skill and patience than rolling paint. But once it is up, you do not need to redo it for years. Painting is faster and easier but needs touching up more often.
