Gutter Calculator
Estimate linear feet of gutters and number of downspouts needed for any roof.
80 linear ft of gutter with 4 downspouts every 20 ft. Each downspout needs 2 elbows (top and bottom). Add 10% to material quantities for waste and cuts. Downspout extensions and splash blocks ordered separately.
Common Questions
How many downspouts do I need?
One downspout for every 20 feet of gutter is the standard recommendation for most areas. In high rainfall regions, space them every 15 feet. A downspout drains roughly 600 square feet of roof area.
What size gutters should I install?
5 inch K-style gutters handle most residential roofs. Use 6 inch gutters for roofs over 1,500 square feet or in areas with heavy rainfall. Bigger gutters cost more but clog less often.
How far apart should gutter hangers be?
Space hangers every 3 feet in most areas. In snow country, space them every 2 feet to handle the extra weight. Gutters should pitch 1/4 inch per 10 feet toward the downspout.
How do I calculate how much gutter I need?
Measure the length of each eave where you are installing gutters. Add those lengths together to get your total linear footage. Add 10 percent for waste and cuts. Count corners, end caps, and outlets separately.
