How much deck stain do I need?

Coverage depends on the type of stain and the condition of the wood. Most deck stains cover about 150 to 300 square feet per gallon. Transparent stains go further because they are thinner. Solid stains cover less because they are thicker. Old dry wood soaks up more stain than new wood. This calculator factors in the stain type and number of coats so you order the right amount.

Types of deck stain and when to use them

Transparent stains let the wood grain show through and are great for new wood or premium lumber you want to show off. Semi transparent stains add some color while still showing grain. They work well for wood that has some wear but is still in decent shape. Solid stains are basically thin paint. They hide the grain completely and are best for older wood that needs coverage. The more pigment in the stain, the more UV protection it provides.

How many coats of stain does a deck need?

Most stains recommend two coats. The first coat soaks into the wood and the second coat builds up the protective layer. Some solid stains are one coat products. Always check the can. Applying a second coat before the first one dries properly will cause problems. Usually you want to wait a few hours between coats, but check the stain instructions for specifics.

When to stain a new deck

New pressure treated wood needs time to dry before it will accept stain properly. Most contractors wait 30 to 60 days after installation. You can test it by sprinkling water on the wood. If the water beads up, the wood is not ready. If it soaks in, you are good to go. Staining too early means the stain will not penetrate and it will peel.

Common Questions

Can you stain a wet deck?

No. The wood needs to be completely dry or the stain will not soak in. Wait at least 24 to 48 hours after rain before staining.

Oil based vs water based deck stain which is better?

Oil based stain soaks deeper and lasts longer but takes a full day to dry. Water based cleans up easy and dries in a couple hours but does not penetrate as well. Oil based is the go-to for most pros.

What temperature is best for staining a deck?

Stain between 50 and 85 degrees with no rain in the forecast for 24 hours. Too cold and the stain will not cure right. Too hot and it dries before it soaks in.

How long does deck stain take to dry?

Water based stain is dry to the touch in 1 to 2 hours. Oil based takes 12 to 24 hours. Wait at least 48 hours before putting furniture back on the deck.
